Things I Would Send to Space as an Indication of Goodwill – List Poem
Things I would send to space as an indication of goodwill
(after Skyler Saunders)
A recording of my mother’s voice / a newborn’s first cry / my childhood poem about a dead butterfly / the few preserved pages of a journal I burned / love letters that I wrote to myself / high school slam books / mixtape of A.R. Rahman’s songs because space needs healing too / Maya Angelou’s ‘Still I Rise’ / my grandmother’s handwritten recipe diary / a tissue paper containing the signature of the boy I love so much / video of my baby calling me ‘amma’ for the first time / chocolate brownies / a jar of fireflies / seashells / sandalwood perfume / Sylvia Plath’s ‘Blackberrying’ / my tear-stained copy of The Book Thief / a photo of my one-year-old self, standing on the moped with a dare-me-not look / a postcard with the name of the place I once called home / fairy lights.
