Summering – Pantoum

Summering – Pantoum

I just stood there inside the jaw of nothing,
Crawling into cold coffins of wordlessness.
I made my home in the hearts of others,
Dissolving deep into a chasm of hope.

Crawling into cold coffins of wordlessness,
I let my dreams be clothed in dubiety.
Dissolving deep into a chasm of hope,
I screamed into the void, seeking peace.

I let my dreams be clothed in dubiety.
I refused to believe in silver linings.
I screamed into the void, seeking peace,
Driving myself to the edge of lunacy.

Refusing to believe in silver linings,
I closed my eyes to the magic within.
I drove myself to the edge of lunacy,
But now I am summering for the first time.

I closed my eyes to the magic within.
I made my home in the hearts of others.
But now I am summering for the first time.
I am no longer inside the jaw of nothing.

P.S.: I just stood there inside the jaw of nothing is a line originally written by Mary Oliver.

A pantoum is composed of a series of quatrains; the second and fourth lines of each stanza are repeated as the first and third lines of the next stanza. The pattern continues for any number of stanzas, except for the final stanza, which differs in the repeating pattern. The first and third lines of the last stanza are the second and fourth of the penultimate; the first line of the poem is the last line of the final stanza, and the third line of the first stanza is the second of the final.
