National Poetry Writing Month 2023 – Poetry Prompts

National Poetry Writing Month starts on April 1st! And I have got some prompts for you all, poets. These prompts are based on my upcoming poetry chapbook From the Land of Longing which has poems on unrequited/unattainable love.

The Prompts:

1. Write an after of my poem ‘Writing a poem about unrequited love is like…‘ and credit me under the title. Read my poem here for reference.

2. Compare your love for someone/something to the galaxy and write a poem with lots of similes and metaphors.

3. Write an acrostic poem for the word – LONGING.

4. Use this line “But here I am, two Octobers (insert any month) later, still kneeling to memories of you in untter reverence” in your poem. Mention in your post that the line was first written by Kavya Janani. U

5. Write a poem about a situation that rendered you tongue-tied and made your mouth dry.

6. You have to bid farewell to someone. Write a poem about not wanting them to go.

7. I wrote my after of Sylvia Plath’s ‘Mad Girl’s Love Song‘. Now I want to see your version. Write an after and credit Sylvia Plath under your title. Read my poem here for reference.

8. Use this line “The metaphors are killing themselves because I no longer ache for you” in your poem. Mention in your post that the line was first written by Kavya Janani. U

9. If you could master the art of forgetting, how’d you do it? Say it in a poem.

10. Write a four-line poem about someone’s first appearance.

11. Use this line “Always in love, yet bloody tired” in your poem. Mention in your post that the line was first written by Kavya Janani. U

12. Write a survival guide for loving someone from a distance.

13. Use these words in your poem: incandescence, marzipan, forevermore, discreet

14. Possible responses for ‘I love you‘. Make them poetic.

15. Use this line “Your full-flowered love is going in vain” in your poem. Mention in your post that the line was first written by Kavya Janani. U

16. Write a nonet poem on unexpressed love.

17. What nourishes you? Write a haiku about it.

18. Use this line “You coax my ache into a sweet release” in your poem. Mention in your post that the line was first written by Kavya Janani. U

19. Ways to save yourself from heartache.

20. Write a poem that compares unrequited love to a never-ending winter.

21. Use this line “This wall of unrequitedness feels like home” in your poem. Mention in your post that the line was first written by Kavya Janani. U

22. Write an ode to serendipity.

23. Write a poem titled ‘Quenching my thirst for true love‘.

24. Take this line “I got some baggage, let’s do some damage” as inspiration and write a poem. Credit Miley Cyrus as the line is from her recent song ‘You’.

25. Use repetition in your poem by repeating this line “What if I am wrong?

26. You are going on a trip to the Land of Longing. What are you taking along with you?

28. Frostbitten heart

29. Tear-stained walls

30. Amorphous verses
