NaPoWriMo Day 8 – How I Discovered Poetry

How I discovered poetry
(after Marilyn Nelson)

Long after we winded up for the day,
the solitary reaper’s song echoed in my mind.
She visited me in my dreams,
where unlike Wordsworth,
I wondered if she was singing about
how they minimized her
to a lass just reaping and caring for others.
It took Mrs Linda four days to convince me that
Nicholson wasn’t in Outer Space,
when I was actually chit-chatting with the moon
about why she never shows us her other side.
For weeks, I was breezing through
a field of daffodils, much to Mrs Linda’s amusement.
She could understand that I wouldn’t turn back
into a student after being a cloud.
I’d narrate to the class
how the butterfly on my porch died
becoming a poem in my notebook
or how the waves crashed against my heart
every time I spilt a word from my pen.
I would fill them all with verses
to make us the liveliest students in the school.
I still believe that a few of them
became poets after it rained that summer,
because I sensed Longfellow’s soul
brimming with pride.
