Anthem for my incontinence after childbirth
(after Kara Jackson)

Lord, she makes me dampish.
Unease stretches itself on my face
like the trail of a jet plane.
But, hell, it could be-
Atishoo!
It could be a part of the Niagara Falls
trickling out of me.
For once, I’m-
Atishoo!
For once, I’m out of control.
I’m real.
I’m wet.
Not one bit turned on.

My incontinence gushes like
she’s got to save me.
She reminds me
that I split open like a lightning
ripping the sky apart.
She warns me-
Atishoo!
She warns me not to keep
my bladder too full.
If being a mother
is to make peace with her,
then so be it.
I’ll mother them both-
my sweet child & my dear incontinence.
