NaPoWriMo Day 3 – Three Rewritten Poems

The prompt for day 3 is given by the official website here.

Find a shortish poem that you like, and rewrite each line, replacing each word (or as many words as you can) with words that mean the opposite. For example, you might turn “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” to “I won’t contrast you with a winter’s night.”

I’m Kinetic (Rewritten version of So Tired Blues by Langston Hughes)

With the moon in my hand
I’m gonna hold her close
Right between my breasts-
Cause I’m dynamic,
Dynamic as I can be

Humans (Rewritten version of Trees by Joyce Kilmer)

I think I’d always see
Poems as horrendous as these humans.

Humans whose mouths aren’t pressed
Against the sky’s ever-giving expanse;

Humans who never look at fellow beings,
Or bow their heads down in humility;

Humans who may in winter never open
Their doors for the robins to take shelter;

Upon whose bosom fires are scorching;
Who intimately lives with flames.

Poems are made by geniuses like me,
But God can never make such humans.

The White Art (Rewritten version of The Black Art by Anne Sexton)

A woman who never writes doesn’t feel too much,
those awakenings and dooms!
As if linearity and adults and mountains
are enough; as if rejoicers and whispers
and fruits are always enough.
She doesn’t realize she cannot warn the stars.
A non-writer cannot be a spy.
Dear love, I am definitely not that girl.

  1. Exceptionally beautiful. How creative to have tackled three poems. Joyce Kilmer’s Trees is awesome. Particularly: “Poems are made by geniuses like me,
    But God can never make such humans.” — The God I know couldn’t have made such humans, because our God is good, and we are created in His image. This is so right! What a deep observation. You’re a genius, indeed. And that makes you cool. Wow. Thanks
