NaPoWriMo Day 2 – Our Feet (Freeverse)

The first prompt of NaPoWriMo was to select a book cover from this article and write a poem inspired by it. I chose the below one.

John Lord Peck. Dress and Care of the Feet. New York: Fowler & Wells, 1871 — Source.

And here’s my poem:

Making love to dust, tiles, marbles,
raw earth, swamp and whatnot.
No wonder they end up cracked,
with the tales of a thousand journeys
dripping through those fissures.
They carry the weight of our daily lives,
be it the sunshine we received
by cracking our crowns open
and embracing the pleasure of carpe diem
or the repressed damage we unscrewed,
wondering whether we are unlovable.
Stress becomes the preservative
for the soles as they trod to conferences,
parties, grocery stores, and back home.
By the end of the day,
do we shower them with love?
Let them know that they are cared for?
Go, apply the foot cream now
or visit the reflexology clinic.
