A Period of Emptiness in My Past – Cento Poem

I rocked shut as a seashell,
Blind to the world
And they stuck me together with glue.
What girl ever flourished in such a company?
Did I escape, I wonder?
I could not run without having to run forever.
A vulturous boredom pinned me to this tree,
Filling my veins with invisibles.
There was only one place to get to-
It was a place of force.
I felt a still busyness, an intent.
I could draw no breath.
Blameless as daylight I stood looking,
Steadily rooted though.
I learned, I learned, I learned elsewhere.
Never never found anywhere.
I stood shut out, for once, for all.
I became a still pebble.

A cento is a form of found poetry where the poet creates a poem by borrowing lines from other poets. I have used Sylvia Plath’s lines from her books The Colossus and Ariel.
